WHO is "CROWN HEIGHTS?"

Dear Brothers & Sisters,

The language of the ikul issued by the Beis Din of Rabbi Chaim Kraus, shlita, implies that members of our community, unrelated to the Zabla, have requested the ikul on behalf of the entire Crown Heights community.

However, the names of these individuals were not stated in the ikul document, nor were they disclosed (to my knowledge) to any member of the Vaad Hakohol.

Q:  What are your thoughts on last nights "know your rights" event?

A:  I think it was a decent beginning, although the turnout should have been better. These kind of events show that there is some promise of a productive relationship between the police and the Crown Heights community.

I did detect a degree of reservation from the speakers. They were holding back, in my opinion. I can't blame them, but I know that if everything was off the record and there were no reporters, an event like this could have been far more productive. It was very nice nonetheless. There were some good points shared at the end.

An Interesting Problem

One of my personal priorities is to reinstate the Netzigim.

The Netzigim play a vital role in our community governance. They represent the interests of the people, run elections, ensure proper financial accountabiliy and disclosure, and even have the power to remove vaad members.

In short, they ensure that the Vaad Hakohol is accountable to the people.

What's Next?

Last night's hachtorah was a tremendous source of chizuk, not only to Rabbi Braun, but to the Badatz as a whole. If anything, it shows that our community is hungry for the type of authoritative leadership that can only be provided through the rabbonim of the Beis Din.

With this in mind I ask all of Crown Heights - those who joined in the hachtorah, and those who did not - to strengthen halachah and rabbonus in the shechunah and pay the Mas Hakohol.
